My Review
Irene V. Phillips has written an imaginative and descriptive novel that does a great job of pulling the reader into the world she has created.

The flow of the novel was well executed and everything as far as pacing went felt smooth.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters both primary and secondary. They all felt like they had their own purpose and had depth that made me care about them.

A wonderful Young Adult Fantasy novel!

PROMO: Sacrifices by @christi_kat

Sacrifices - PROMO Blitz
(A Jeff Woods Mystery); Sequel to Attachment Strings
By Chris T. Kat

M/M  Mystery/Suspense
Date Published: 4/28/2014

When he was outed on the local news, Jeff Woods gave up his dream job as a detective to become an on-air radio personality. The sacrifice was worth it to keep Alex and Sean in his life, but Alex lost his job, too. Jeff can tell Alex worries he’s pressuring Jeff too much, first with Sean and now the lack of money, but he has no idea what that will lead Alex to do. Desperate times bring out the stupidity in some people, and when Jeff discovers Alex is in over his head in a situation he can’t handle, he needs all his self-control to stay calm.

Life is not easy with the Church of Virtue still spouting venom wherever they go, homophobes at the police department, a gangster who wants Alex in the worst possible way, and a bed that barely holds one grown man, much less two (and a child), but Jeff is there to stay for good, and he’ll do what it takes to make Alex believe him.

EXCERPT

After wishing Sean a good day at school, which he answered with a sullen look, I made my way over to Alex. He got up from his chair and threw himself into my open arms.

I held him tight, felt him tremble slightly. He whispered, “I don’t want him to make a fuss when the school bus arrives. I can’t handle this shit anymore.”

He was almost sobbing the last sentence. Sean had given him hell since school had started. We both understood Sean’s refusal, but St. Christopherus School was the only one available for him.

Sean never wanted to get on his school bus, which he showed everyone in no uncertain terms. He screamed and cried and thrashed around in his wheelchair so violently that he’d managed to flip the wheelchair onto its side on several occasions.

His new bus driver, an elderly woman named Patricia Cornell, was an incredibly patient person. Somehow she always convinced Sean she’d take care of him and got him on the bus. By the time the bus left, Alex was either crying or close to tears. I’d witnessed all of this several times in the past weeks and generally sat with Alex afterward while he tried to compose himself.

Today he’d be on his own.

Tightening my grip, I whispered back, “He’ll get over it eventually. His therapist said as much.”

Alex snorted. “Yeah, Burnes also said he’d get over his nightmares eventually. Do you see that happening? Because I damn well don’t.”

His trembles increased and fast puffs of breath tickled my throat. Not a good sign. Helplessly, I murmured his name.

Sean whistled sharply, obviously not happy about being excluded from the conversation. Alex jumped in my arms and tried to push away from me. I held on, keeping him crushed to my chest.

“Jeff, I need—”

“No, you don’t,” I cut him off. “Sean will survive not being the center of your attention for a moment. Relax.”

“Relax?” Alex snapped, again struggling to get free from me.

Lifting him off his feet, I carried him over to his chair, plonked down on it, and settled him on my lap, all the while ignoring his protests. “Hush now, I’m in charge here.”

“No, you’re not.”

“But yes, of course I am. Who else could be in charge here other than me?”

Sean laughed from the other side of the table. I winked at him. Alex finally stopped struggling and leaned against me instead.

“How about me?” he asked.

“You?” I countered, doing my best to sound sufficiently horrified.

Alex bumped a fist against my chest, smiling a bit. “Yes.”

“Well, for one, I like to be in charge and you don’t.”

“That’s not true!”

“Don’t interrupt me,” I said. The corners of my mouth curved upward, even though I tried to keep a straight face. “I’m having a really good daydream right now.”

“Really? What’s it about?”

“Oh, just that you’re acknowledging my awesomeness and—”

“All right, all right, you’re awesome and in charge and I was short of having a meltdown. Yet again.” He sighed.

“Hah! I knew someday you’d say it!”

“Yeah, yeah, don’t let it go to your head. We don’t want you to be distracted while you’re on your way to work,” Alex muttered.

And that was the real problem, or at least part of it. Alex feared something could happen to me—on my way to work, at work, on my way back, anywhere.

I couldn’t blame him. Resting my cheek on top of his head, I pulled him closer to me. Alex shuddered, then trailed a finger over my shirt, tracing the large scar hidden under it.

Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
“Some men think there’s a choice between right and wrong. Great men know there is none.” ~ General Steven Randall Taking her father’s famous speech to heart, Samantha believes in this common value that will take on extraordinary meaning in The Trucker’s Cat.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
I embrace the challenges of researching, outlining, writing, and editing. However, the biggest hurdle is not succumbing to the mundane distractions.

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I’ve written the romance The Trucker’s Cat, the thriller Chemical Attraction, and its sequel Chemical Reaction. As my book-children, they each hold a special place in my heart. However, I adore Samantha Randall from The Trucker’s Cat and Joe Roberts from The Chemical Attraction Series.

Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
I’d cast Captain America’s Chris Evans as Major Logan McCormick. Why? He’s already military.

When did you begin writing?
Writing started out as busy work. My children were grown, and I worked part-time. I didn’t consider myself a “real” writer until my husband pointed out the passion I had for the process. I realized the more I wrote the more compelled I was to write.

How long did it take to complete your first book?
The researching and outlining took about three months with six months of writing. I tweaked and edited the story after that.

Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
I’ve learned different writing techniques from an eclectic group of authors. However, my husband inspired me to pursue writing. He pushed me to get those crazy ideas out of my head and onto paper. If he hoped to make me sane, the joke’s on him. That empty space just filled in with more crazy ideas. Bahaha!

What is your favorite part of the writing process?
I love getting lost in the story, becoming the characters, delving into their lives, and seeing where they take me.

Describe your latest book in 4 words.
A fast-paced patriotic romance

Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?
The third book and prequel to The Chemical Attraction Series, Their Rigid Rules, is with the editor now. I wrote it as a short story years ago and recently fleshed it out. Joe had stayed in my head until I gave him his own story with Chemical Attraction and Chemical Reaction. Although Joe is a secondary character in this prequel, he has an important role. On the surface, Joe’s a player. Deep down, he’s searching for his soul mate, the one person who will love him for his faults, not in spite of them. His path becomes clearer in Their Rigid Rules.

I truly believe the healing power of Love is incredibly profound, and I try to portray that in all of my novels, including The Trucker’s Cat.

What Would You Choose, love or duty?
On the brink of civil war, the Torrian Alliance continues with its mission to obliterate Star-children across the universe in order to suppress an intergalactic evil. Following the recommendations of his council, King Gregorio Derry reluctantly agrees to send his only son William on a mission to restore honor to his family name. William seeks to complete his assignment, the elimination of a Star-child named Sydney on planet Earth, but when the assassination is delayed he begins to realize an emotional connection with his target. With conspiracy threatening his home planet, and a hidden menace on Earth seeking to secure a vested interest, William finds himself torn between irrevocable duty and sacrificing everything he stands for to defend Sydney. As William and Sydney struggle to overcome their impossible circumstances, they start to wonder if the connection of two Star-Crossed lovers will be enough to save them from certain doom.

EXCERPT

He leaned in close to her ear. “Please Sydney, give me one more chance. The dreams, they are of you. If only I could have understood sooner, I may have been able to change our fate. But now, I know you have the power to change this. You are more than any normal person. You are the one thing I have traveled across distance and time for.”
A ray of sunlight broke through the clouds, slipping past the overlying trees. They kissed Sydney’s face. She gasped, and her lifeless body rose from the dead. Sydney swallowed a deep breath and grabbed William’s shoulders. His many tears drained from his face. The infectious warmth returned.
“I knew you’d return to me. Somehow, I knew it,” he whispered.
“I was lost for a moment in nothing but deep dark space. But I heard a voice calling out to me. It was very familiar to me. Someone I had met before. It was a woman’s voice. She told me it was time to go back. She told me I had a calling to do something great and the time of my awakening was at hand.” Sydney wiped the tears from his eyes. “Then I heard you, speaking to me from the darkness. Your voice guided me as I ran forward, until finally I saw a ray of light and I stepped into it.”
He squeezed her and planted his lips on hers. His solar cells erupted, and Sydney became surrounded in a bright aura that lifted them off the ground. He opened his eyes, amazed by what he saw. He planted another kiss, this time on Sydney’s forehead.
“There’s my signature,” he whispered.
They floated back to the ground and Sydney pulled him close.
“Sydney, is there any way you could forgive me for what I’ve done?”
Sydney caressed his face. “What’s done is done. Even through all the pain, something inside me knew that you would save me. Love brought you to me and somehow, I knew love would give you the strength to protect me.”
The present situation invaded his thoughts. “And protect you I will. I must explain everything to you, Sydney. Come with me.”

z2 is part of 46. Ascending, a collection of loosely interrelated novels about five very different family members who each discover that they can do the extraordinary when circumstances require it. These books are designed to be read as stand alone stories or in any order.

Interview

Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
There are a few to be honest, but in z2 I focus a lot on tolerance. I firmly believe that the best and worst human qualities are well distributed among every age group, both genders, every race, culture and religion, every sexual preference, every style and every income level. To me, one of the missions of a writer is to take a reader outside of their own head and into that of another. More than anything, I’d like to increase our understanding and appreciation of each other.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
For me, it’s not giving up.  With each book I’ve written I’ve hit at least one point where I had to ask why am I doing this? Shouldn’t I get some chores done instead? There isn’t a good answer to that, and my house is generally a mess. But every time I consider quitting, I don’t. I always find a reason to keep writing.
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I’m working on my fifth book now, and my favorite is always the one I am working on. This latest one has to do with a young woman to can see the future. It’s been very challenging to define her abilities, but now that I’ve gotten my arms around it I am really enjoying the story.
If You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
That’s a fun question, especially because my main character in z2, Alex, is modeled loosely after my husband. Alex is a light-haired former college basketball player who is now about fifty. I was stumped, but my husband just walked through the room and was kind enough to suggest Brad Pitt. Okay, I did give him some grief about that choice, but personally, I see Alex as more of a Kevin Costner type.
When did you begin writing?
I used to make up bedtime stories for my little sister. She was not only nice enough to beg me for more, she’s stayed nice enough to still be one of my best beta readers All my life characters have marched their way through my head, having all sorts of adventures and interactions while I waited at traffic lights or took a shower. It was more a matter of deciding that I really had to start writing this stuff down, which I started to do in 2010.
How long did it take to complete your first book?
I wrote an outline for the six novels in the 46. Ascending collection in late 2010 and started writing x0 right after that. It took me about six months to write and two months to rewrite, then I let it set for a few months and came back to it.  I always knew that I would self-publish these, and I published it in February 2012.
Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
Two authors affected me a lot as a young girl.  Madeleine L'Engle and her “A Wrinkle in Time” hadn’t been out all that long when I first read it and I thought it was greatest thing ever. Of course it went on to have sequels and win all sorts of awards. The other author, Jane Langton, wrote a book called “The Diamond in the Window” and I obsessed over that book in grade school. Both authors shaped my young view of the world and convinced me that there was real magic tucked in-between and all around the layers of ordinary reality.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?
I think I am addicted to the adrenaline high of having my characters surprise me with unexpected twists.
Describe your latest book in 4 words.
mystery morphs into solution
Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?
I am working on a collection of six novels called 46. Ascending.  Each book is the stand alone story of one member of a family as he or she discovers an extraordinary power to turn to when circumstances force them to dig deep.
The first book, x0, concerns telepathic Lola as she finds herself the unlikely hero in a rescue mission in Nigeria. The second book, y1, tells of her son Zane, who has always had an odd ability to alter his appearance.  Zane finds himself in danger while working at a pharmaceutical company and at more risk once he is sent on a sales trip to the South Pacific. My third book, z2, is the subject of the this blog tour.

I just published my fourth book, c3, on kindle and it will  be available in paperback soon. It takes place in Darjeeling, where youngest daughter Teddie encounters a human trafficking ring and then an ancient group offers to train her to use her innate skills for out of body experiences to save her friends.

I hope to finish the fifth book, d4, this summer. It will tell the story of the middle child in the family. a young woman named Ariel who can see the future. I am very excited about getting to finally start the sixth and last novel next fall, in which all five family members will use their powers to work together. And I have no idea what I am going to do after that.

Sherrie Roth grew up in Western Kansas thinking that there was no place in the universe more fascinating than outer space. After her mother vetoed astronaut as a career ambition, she went on to study journalism and physics in hopes of becoming a science writer.
She published her first science fiction short story in 1979 and then waited a lot of tables while she looked for inspiration for the next story. When it finally came,  it declared to her that it had to be whole book, nothing less. One night, while digesting this disturbing piece of news, she drank way too many shots of ouzo with her boyfriend. She woke up thirty-one years later demanding to know what was going on.
The boyfriend, who she had apparently long since married, asked her to calm down and  explained that in a fit of practicality she had gone back to school and gotten a degree in geophysics and had spent the last 28 years interpreting seismic data in the oil industry. The good news, according to Mr. Cronin, was that she had found it at least mildly entertaining and ridiculously well-paying  The bad news was that the two of them had still managed to spend almost all of the money.
Apparently she was now Mrs. Cronin, and the further good news was that they had produced three wonderful children whom they loved dearly, even though to be honest that is where a lot of the money had gone. Even better news was that Mr. Cronin  turned out to be a warm-hearted, encouraging sort who was happy to see her awake and ready to write. "It's about time," were his exact words.
Sherrie Cronin discovered that over the ensuing decades Sally Ride had already managed to become the first woman in space and apparently had done a fine job of it. No one, however, had written the book that had been in Sherrie's head for decades. The only problem was, the book informed her sternly that it had now grown into a six book series. Sherrie decided that she better start writing it before it got any longer. She's been wide awake ever since, and writing away.

Will Josh be able to save the love of his life and prevent her parents from taking her away?  Will he be able to help Jillian through her mental illness before it takes over her life?  Will Laney’s relationship with her parents ever be salvaged?  Will Josh and Laney have their happily ever after, or will the hurdles they have to jump through prove to be more than they can handle?

Excerpt

Dr. Josh Stone stood helpless as Laney, seemingly in slow motion, fell to the floor. The thud as her body hit the tiles shot goose bumps through his flesh. For a brief moment he was paralyzed. His girlfriend, also a trauma nurse-had been shot by the patient they had been taking care of. The sight of the man sitting up and grabbing Officer Miller’s gun from his holster replayed in Josh’s brain. The man pointed it at Laney and shot her several times before anyone was able to subdue him. Now, Josh stood helplessly as she lay motionless on the floor. How could this happen in his trauma room? How could he let this happen to Laney? His knees seemed to buckle as he sank to Laney’s side, stethoscope dangling from his neck.
Laney’s curly blonde hair covered much of her face, but it was clear she was unconscious. Josh gently shook her hoping for the slightest response. There was none. She had been shot in the chest.
Someone shrieked. One of the ER nurses, Dinah’s eyes were wide, both hands covered her mouth. She pointed to the floor. A puddle of blood oozed from under Laney. The metallic aroma wrinkled his nose.
Josh fought the anger raging inside him. He wanted to make the son-of-a-bitch who shot Laney pay for hurting her.
For now, let the cops handle it. Josh took a deep breath and struggled to regain his composure, but failed miserably.
“My God! Laney! How could this happen?” His face was hot. He swiped at it with his blood soaked hands and realized he was crying.
“Dr. Stone. Dr. Stone!”
Josh looked up. Dinah’s lips were moving, but her words weren’t computing. A couple of techs and nurses eased Laney from his arms. Not only did he feel the emptiness, it plagued his heart and his soul.
Josh helped lift Laney onto a gurney. Dinah placed her hand on his shoulder. “You need to help her. She needs you now more than ever.”
Dinah put her cold hands on Josh’s flushed face. “Dr. Stone, I know you’re in shock, but you need to focus. You’re the only one who can save her.”
Josh turned his head, causing the frigid hands to fall from his face. He rubbed his swollen eyes and surveyed the room. The devastation was beyond words. Officer Miller had the man who shot Laney subdued in handcuffs. He lay on the table with his disheveled hair covering his face. Someone must have given him a sedative because he wasn’t moving. Equipment had been knocked over, and supplies thrown everywhere. Josh’s heart rate sped up as he cast his eyes down at the pool of blood surrounding his feet.
“Where is she?”
“They’ve taken her to the O.R to get her prepped. You need to get down there right now. Dr. Nessler is coming in to finish up with this guy.”
Josh darted out of the room with an urgency he never felt before.  Each step he took, his pace quickened until he was in a full sprint to the O.R.

Jennifer is a Registered Nurse, and she holds a Master’s degree in Nursing Administration.  She has 15 years of experience working in the Emergency Room and the Intensive Care Unit of a major trauma center.  While she is equally adept at all facets of patient care, Emergency room nursing is her passion, and is the inspiration for this story and A Shot in the Dark.  Currently, she resides in Southern California with her husband and their three amazing boys.  A Shot in the Dark was her debut novel with Into the Light following as the sequel.
