Every paramedic’s worst nightmare is to arrive at the scene of a horrific accident and find out that the victim is someone they love. Or, in Caden Ross’s case, the woman he used to love. It took two years to finally get over Dakota and move on with his life, or so Caden believed, until he has to face the thought of a world without her. Nothing could have prepared the handsome, headstrong off-duty paramedic for the emotional upheaval of keeping the woman he once thought would be his forever alive.

Dakota Martineau appeared to have the world in the palm of her hand. She is beautiful, kind, has an adoring family, including her best friend and identical twin sister. She has a passion for incorporating her love of life, family, and her cultural background into her dream job with special needs kids. Then, in a life-altering crash, she discovers just how fragile life is. Thankful to be surrounded by an incredible group of friends who will help heal, not just her body, but also her soul, she knows she should be happy she is alive and on the mend, but Dakota is still tormented by the loss of her one true love.

How can you feel safe with the one person who hurt you the most? What road will Caden and Dakota take when they discover fate wreaked havoc on everything they thought was true?

Interview

1)  Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
Yes, that sometimes family doesn’t have to be the one we are born into. It can be the people that become the family of our heart. Sibling rivalry can destroy families and there are more than just two victims. Parents can’t choose between children and shouldn’t have to even if one of their children is wrong or done horrible things. The love of a child is unconditional.

2)  Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Yes, trying to balance my work and the rest of my life. I raised four sons, worked and have a very active social life. When I am writing, I lose all sense of time and can write for fourteen hours straight. I work six days a week and it consumes my every thought. I even dream about my characters. Can you say obsessive-compulsive? So many words and so little time!

3)  How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I am currently wrapping up my fifth book. My fourth will hit the shelves in a couple of weeks. I have my research and written all my notes for my sixth. My favourite will always be my second book Lyrics Heart & Soul. The book is about a man who soul is so tortured and it takes one incredible spit fire of a woman and a bunch of special needs teenagers to teach him the value of human life. Some people hated him so much they refused to finish the book. I think that is truly an injustice because finding the good in someone is often the most rewarding thing we can do. I am in love with Ryder and he will always be my most beloved character.

4)  If You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
Chace Crawford would be my choice simply because he looks just like the description of my character Caden and I love his smile. I have to be honest I don’t watch TV and rarely go to the movies. I love reading and read three books a week. So, I’m not very Hollywood savvy.

5)  When did you begin writing?
I began writing on my computer about two years ago but in my head for my whole life. I love to people watch and make stories up about them. I love to travel to different places in the world and I want the reader to travel with me.

6)  How long did it take to complete your first book?
I wrote it in secret because I didn’t have a lot of faith in myself. I already had a career, a husband, four sons and a lot of friends. But it was something I needed to do for myself. To prove I could do it and do it well. So, it took me over a year. But once it was done I haven’t stopped or looked back. My mind is a disorganized messy busy place but somehow it works for me. When I write, I get to escape and be someone for a while. Therefore, I feel like I’m living many different lives. I love the research and learning about different subjects. Writing is my drug of choice.

7)  What is your favorite part of the writing process?
I love when the characters take over. Once their personality is developed they become real to me. I fight the direction of chapters with them all the time. Sometimes I sit down to write and I am going in one direction and then I read reread the chapter and it isn’t what I intended to write. One time I had to write a chapter twice. The first time, the way I wanted and the next the way the character wanted. I’m embarrassed to say the character won. If you read any of my books you will know Edward. He is the bane of my existence. He also is trying to convince me it is because he is my favourite but he’s wrong. It is Ryder and will always be Ryder. Not ever Edward sorry!

8)  Describe your latest book in 4 words.
Heartbreaking, beautiful, tragic, survival.

9)  Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?
I am writing My Beloved Past. It is about a girl who falls in love at fifteen and gets pregnant. She loses her boyfriend, her baby, and the father she adored. Ten years later a kidney transplant changes her past, present and future. The final book in this series, book six is about a subject near and dear to my heart, eating disorders. Someone I love very much suffers with anorexia. She is allowing me to use her diaries for research and I am truly honoured and wish to give credence to her struggles and ongoing recovery. My next series will be about four brothers and their mother. Like I said before so many words and not enough time.
