Doe’s Circus, one of the last of its kind in Australia. Travelling across the country all year round, thousands of humans visit to revel in the tradition of Dagwood dogs, dodgem cars and the weekend prime time show.

Yet for the animals locked away in the small confines of the petting zoo, the circus is a neon-lit, human-infested nightmare.

Tormented by the ringmaster and his gang of tyrannical showmen, two pigs, a rooster and a sheep devise a plan to accomplish the impossible―escape the circus.

Interview

Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?

The core message is to reinforce that animals have no place in a circus.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

The most challenging aspect of writing for me is trimming the fat and keeping it clean and concise.

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

I’ve written two books: The Red Chilli and Animal Circus. I’d have to say that Animal Circus is my favourite because the style of writing is punchy and it has an important message behind it.

If You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?

Tom Hanks to do the voiceover of Walt the pig because he has an excellent voice and it would complement the ethical and resilient cornerstone of Walt.

When did you begin writing?

I began writing short stories on my family desktop when I was 12-years-old.

How long did it take to complete your first book?

It took me around 18 months to complete The Red Chilli. Add another 6 months for editing and hair-pulling after sending it to publishers.

Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?

J.K Rowling and J. R. R. Tolkien were my first two influences for writing novels. I fell in love with The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter (like millions of others) and desperately wanted to write a story that would make people feel as engrossed and happy as those books made me feel.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

Writing the last page of course!

Describe your latest book in 4 words.

Animals escaping the circus.

Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?

I’m currently working on a collection of short stories that centers around a prohibition that’s been instated in Australia.
