Kari was dead—and then, she wasn’t.

But for the wolf-demon with lightning in her fists, resurrection is no reprieve from exile. After old witch Zina revives her, Kari must conceal her true nature better than ever before, lest her slayers find her breathing and put her down for good. And since she can no longer return to what she once knew, Kari finds herself adrift—in search of purpose.

She gets it when Zina entrusts her with the Lapis Anima, a gem imprisoning the soul of wicked woman, Raven. This brings her into conflict with Raven herself, who’s still very much a threat without her soul… and has devious plans in mind for Kari’s destructive abilities.

Will the wolf-demon succumb to Raven’s cruel temptations?

Or will Kari turn to an unlikely ally for help—the very man who killed her, one year ago?

Interview

Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?

I think the message I want readers to take in from Storm & Shadow is something like…the darkness can be tempting. You have to look hard to see the light. When you do find it, it’s worth the fight.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

 I find I struggle a lot with exciting descriptions. It’s something I’ve fiddled and worked on over the years, but I still need so much work. I just don’t have a mental eye for fine details on clothes and buildings! D;

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

I’ve written maybe a dozen or more books, mostly within Kari’s world. My favorite tilts between Heart of the Storm (Book 4!) and Storm & Shadow. Each of them introduces an amazing villain—some people who follow me on Twitter may know who debuts in Heart >:3

If You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?

Oh man I am NOT SURE. My brain first goes to Jennifer Lawrence, a consistent favorite of mine. But I’m sure there’s way better matches, I’m just not totally sure!!

When did you begin writing?

I started writing a little before the age of 10. My first “book” was a retelling of Kingdom Hearts, where me and two of my friends got sucked into another world and received elemental swords and had to fight villains from various media. Also I fell in love with Raziel from Soul Reaver (I mean, he doesn’t even have a jaw…what the hell).

How long did it take to complete your first book?

From first draft to publication, Birth of the Storm took something like 20 years!! There was a lot of procrastination, soooo much “I’m just doing this for fun, meh,” and a ton of getting caught up with beta readers, critique partners, and editors. Now here I am!

Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?

Despite the nonsense she’s dipped herself in, I must always name JK Rowling as my first inspiration. I wanted my series to be long like hers, and I wanted my characters to strike readers like hers struck me. Without Harry Potter, I don’t know that I would have taken the many steps I did.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

My favorite part is learning more about my characters. Sometimes they surprise me with their actions and dialogue, and it’s always a ride!

Describe your latest book in 4 words.

Oof, tough! Maybe…

 Tempting darkness, conflicting conscience?!

Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?

Currently I’m editing and rewriting Book 6. I’m in the later half of it, which shouldn’t change a ton! After that, I might leap back into Book 4 so it can be ready for my beta readers.

Kari’s series is all written now, and just needs the right touch-ups to make it as perfect as I can get it. I am SO excited, happy, and proud of all the work Kari and I have done together.
