In 1944, a German artillery shell destroyed Milt Greenlee’s future in professional baseball. His hideously scarred face and useless arm require him to relearn and recondition. But no amount of rehab will restore his looks or his self-confidence. There’s no chance a “cripple” like him could catch the eye of the stunning Nurse McEwen.
Army Nurse, Annie McEwen dreams her voice will take her far away from her hateful, overbearing father. She hopes Milt, a patient who fought in Sicily, might be the one who can help her find closure with the death of her cousin.
As their attraction grows, how can their relationship survive Annie's fears and Milt's secret?
Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
Love can heal
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
The premise may come from my research or from an event in everyday life.
Either way the research can be challenging. Sometimes I have to leave out a
scene or change it because I couldn’t verify that the particular thing existed
at the time or the events didn’t happen the way I wanted them to in my story.
Matching historical and real-life events with my story’s plot can get
complicated.
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
Scarred Dreams is my third published novel. I don’t count what came
before and was never published. My favorite is always the last one I wrote,
although I love them all.
If You had the chance to cast your main character from
Perhaps a young Harrison Ford because of his performance in Regarding
Henry where he played a man with a brain injury and his recovery. His
performance showed empathy for the injured man and the difficult realities he had
to deal with.
When did you begin writing?
I’ve been writing for years
but unlike many other writers I did not start writing as a child. In school I
didn’t like creative writing. I think I began writing when I felt I had
something to say. I had lived long enough to have real life experiences, real
emotions that I could bring to a story.
How long did it take to complete your first book?
Years. I kept revising and
editing until I got brave enough to send it to an editor or agent. For me
writing is a long process. Add to that the time it takes to find a publisher
who likes the book. That first one was never published but it was a great learning
tool for later books.
Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
I have read books all my life and many of the authors inspired me. But
the ones who inspired me the most were writers I met in my writing group, First
Coast Romance Writers. They provided encouragement and support when I really
needed it and, without them, I would not be published today.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Probably working out the plot. It is the most challenging part but also
the most fun. I do much of this in my head before I ever start typing it into
my laptop. During this phase I can let my imagination run wild, coming up with
characters and events, locations, and ties to the war.
Describe your latest book in 4 words.
Wounded Warrior Rebuilds Life
Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the
future for your writing?
I’m working on a two-generation story starting during World War II and
ending up during the Vietnam War showing how the parents experiences affect
their children.
