It is the first book in The Chronicles of a Planet’s End. The Chronicles of a Planet’s End is a series of journals telling the end of the planet Earth.
You can begin the journey to the end.
Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
I think the principal idea behind the book is that sometimes what a
person hates most about themselves is what can be most powerful. The story is
about a woman who believes herself to be cursed. In a way, she is, but in
accepting that curse, she finds that her destiny was more incredible than she
could imagine. It doesn’t come easy or comfortable. It’s not meant to be an
easy or comfortable book. I also wanted to take the idea of the black widow
woman and look at it from a woman’s perspective. It wasn’t the seductive cliché,
but a horrible curse. It would isolate a woman completely. She would never want
to hurt someone.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
I think the hardest part about writing is convincing myself that it has
to be my priority. It is not easy to make a living as an author. The result is
a mix match of jobs to feed the writing. It is hard to convince myself that my
writing has to be my number one profession and that everything else is there to
feed the writing. I am getting better at it. In my happy place, I would write
all day.
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
Right now, I have one eBook published and four Vellas. The Vellas are
not complete. I add new chapters every four days. I have written six other
books that I have not published. The idea is to have twelve Vellas running at
once. After they are complete, I will turn them into eBooks and then
paperbacks. They are all part of the same world, Chronicles of a Planet’s End. Each
book is a journal. When the series is complete, it will tell about the end of
the planet and its consequences. I couldn’t choose a favorite. I like them all
for different reasons. They are all part of a bigger puzzle.
If You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
My professional education is in film. I have an MFA in film and one in VFX.
I know I write seeing my books like I’d see films. I have also written
screenplays. Kind of Human began as a film. It has been cast and shot. Hopefully,
I’ll have the funding to complete it as an addition to the book. The film is a simpler
story. As a result, I do see the principal characters as the actors who played
the film. They are not A List actors, and I will share more once I am ready to
release the film.
When did you begin writing?
I began writing when I was five or six years old. My grandmother was a playwright.
I grew up in Mexico City. When I was a little kid, I would walk over to my
grandmother’s house after school and sit on the floor of her study watching her
work. She would hand me paper and I would write along with her. Every so often,
she would pause, and we would compare stories. It was then that I started
writing. Still, I didn’t fully embrace it until I was a bit older. It took me a
long time to read because I have some dyslexia. It wasn’t until my first year in
college when I wrote my first novel. In my thirties I wrote another three and
shopped them around. I didn’t embrace independent publishing until a few years
ago. I wouldn’t go back. I love it.
How long did it take to complete your first book?
That’s not an easy question to answer. I can write the first draft of a book
in a month. Then I go into an unbearable self-doubting phase. Then the
rewrites. As a result, I might write the book quickly, but I will doubt
publishing for fifteen years. It is one of the reasons I decided to publish on
Vella. It forces me to have a timeline and publish. Then it is in the audience’s
hands, and I can’t backtrack and freak out.
Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
I think my grandmother inspired me to be an author. She always looked at
me with a bit of pity that I’d fallen in love with the storytelling craft. It
is a hard life. There are authors I love. I’m not sure I’d call them inspiration,
but I love their work. Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, John Irving, Isabel Allende,
N.K. Jemisin, and more. I love reading. Currently, I’m on a cozy mystery binge,
but I don’t write cozy mysteries. I write science fiction.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Writing that first draft. It is the best. I sit
at my computer, with music in soundproof headphones and a candle. I just let
myself be swallowed into my story. It is the greatest feeling ever. I love it.
Describe your latest book in 4 words.
A heartbreaking, impossible, intergalactic
romance
Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the
future for your writing?
I think I will spend the next ten years building into Chronicles of a
Planet’s End. It has twelve character journals. Each character will have
between five and eight books for each. I am at the very beginning of what will
be an incredible adventure. If all goes well, I’ll have the whole first series
of journals for each character out in Vella this year, and maybe also out in eBook
as well.
