A Widow Writer Mystery
Jaynie Floyd, a celebrated mystery writer, has a book on the New York Times
bestseller list. It’s wonderful news and her agent wants to send her
on a book tour to promote it. However, Jaynie is newly widowed and
doesn’t want to go. As she works through her grief, a myriad of
problems arise with family and life.
Once she finally decides to go on the book tour, partially to escape, all
hell breaks loose. One of the other authors on the tour is murdered and
Jaynie’s instincts as a mystery writer are called into action. Soon
she is chasing down leads and suspects, all the while avoiding requests from
police and family to keep out of it. Her skills and curiosity take Jaynie
into dangerous territory, from which she may not escape. Bodies pile up as
she gets closer to the truth. Truth that could make sure she bothers the
killer no more.
Book Tour Madness is a story of survival after the death of a spouse, mixed
with an old-fashioned murder mystery.
INTERVIEW
Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
Life doesn’t stop because you have lost someone you loved. When my husband died, my sisters flew in to be with me. I had to go to the grocery store before they arrived. I remember standing in the vegetable section wondering what I was doing. My husband had just died that very day and I was doing something ordinary. Life stopped for a moment or two until I picked out my vegetables and left. It’s that very quality of being ordinary that gets us through tough times.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Sometimes the muse sits on my shoulder and sometimes she doesn’t. It can be challenging coming up with creative ideas, unique ideas.
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I’ve written 30+ books in several different genres. I enjoy creating mysteries the most. It’s a kick to figure out whodunit and why. I think that’s why I write: it’s fun! I’m so thrilled when I read a well-written sentence that I’ve written that I throw my arms up and cheer!
If You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
I would pick Jennifer Garner. She’s able to bounce from comedy to drama easily.
When did you begin writing?
I began writing some fifteen years ago with a children’s series that I wrote with my sister. We were always able to bounce ideas off one another and decided to write books based on our lives as young sisters. We wove our ideas into a series called the Floyd Sisters Mysteries. The books are very cute about sisters who solve mysteries.
How long did it take to complete your first book?
It only took a month or less to complete our first book called Danger in Dallas. What took far longer was how to get it published. Self publishing was very new then, but was the route I took to publishing. It was so exciting to see my first book in print!
Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
I’ve always enjoyed the works of Sue Grafton and Tony Hillerman. Both are mystery writers but unique. Sue’s protagonist, Kinsey Millhone, was irreverent and fun, while Tony’s Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn were the stuff of legends. Both authors are so memorable and influential to young writers.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Getting the initial idea and sitting down to start the very first paragraph is thrilling. My favorite parts of writing are beginning a book and finishing it. The middle can get a little tricky.
Describe your latest book in 4 words.
Mystery writer becomes investigator.
Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?
I’m writing the second book in my Thanksgiving Murders series. The detective, Dan Alsop, is overwhelmed with the murder of his long-time mentor. It takes place in Carson City, Nevada, in the dead of winter.
