A cathartic experience that examines both the power of determination and the will to survive.
In her memoir, Getting To My Enough, Dr. Marie Brown Mercadel describes her remarkable journey of persevering through unspeakable childhood sexual trauma, the loss of a baby at an early age, and her tenacious resolve to get to her enough. Her frank and detailed descriptions of her life experiences are riveting and provide proof that it is possible to achieve personal triumphs in spite of the odds.
She is courageous in writing about the deep-seated emotions that caused her to be overwhelmed with self-doubt, fear, and shame for much of her adult life. Her acts of forgiveness and the adoption of self-love represent an important source of her healing.
Getting To My Enough reveals how a broken and damaged girl gained inner peace, affirmed the positive aspects of her life, and embarked on a mission to mentor and motivate women dealing with similar issues.
Tell me more about
your journey as an author, including the writing process?
I starting writing in a journal a few years
ago because I found that this helped me to relieve stress, refocus my thoughts,
and give me the opportunity to track the highs and lows I experienced in my
life. I recognized that although I was working on a professional level to
address the trauma I experienced as a child, I needed to do more internal work
to address my personal issues. During
COVID, a time when we were all required to slow down I had a great deal of time
to sit in my own thoughts; it was then that I decided to begin the formal
process of writing the book. It was
difficult because I was releasing emotions that I held deeply inside for
decades. I took weeks off at a time when
I needed to regroup and the more I wrote the more I was determined to
finish. I know that there are many women
(and men) who are survivors and they have not told their own stories - I would
like to be an inspiration for them to start the process of healing. The entire
process was cathartic and once the book was complete I felt like I had
completed a two-year therapy regimen.
