Bevil Cyrex, adrift in space on a ship determined to kill him, stumbles across an ancient and abandoned space station called The Starlite.
Once on board the station he sets about repairing it, with the goal of opening up for business.
Along the way he befriends a possibly sociopathic, all powerful nanite swarm, who has decided to take on the appearance and mannerisms of his grandmother.
He must also contend with being hunted by an ex-mob enforcer looking for revenge, a handful of pirates and various threats of invasion, marriage and death.
All in all, Bevil would have to admit, things were really looking up.
INTERVIEW
Is
There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
Well
I will say that Starlite was written to just be a fun read. I want readers to experience (hopefully)
putting their cares aside and being taken someplace fun and exciting if only
for a little while. However, there are
some themes in the book I hope people will enjoy like redemption, growth and
living your life for yourself and not others.
Is
there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
I
think the biggest challenge is just walking away. I would happily tinker with
and tweak my story forever, but in the end that’s not practical. At some point
I just need to tell myself “this is the story” and try not to think about how I
could have written something differently, or taken the book in a certain
direction.
How
many books have you written and which is your favorite?
This
is only my second novel. My first novel The Geek was a hardboiled, pulp style,
hyper violent thriller and my latest Starlite is more of an action/comedy space
romp. I’m proud of both novels for different reasons and don’t know that I have
a favorite.
If
You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today,
who would you pick and why?
Caleb McLaughlin.
He’s great on Stranger Things and I really enjoyed him in Concrete
Cowboy.
When
did you begin writing?
I
started writing a little over twenty years ago. I’ve mostly worked in
television and film as a consultant and script doctor. Novels are a relatively
new phase of my writing life, though I do still work in TV and Film.
How
long did it take to complete your first book?
First
book was a bit of an interesting process. I’m nine and a half years sober now
and the writing process of The Geek was stalled by some much needed time in
rehab followed by six months of just making sure I could stay sober. So it took
nearly three years.
Did
you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
I would say Robert Heinlein is the
author who inspired me the most on a number of levels. I know it was his YA
novels that got me addicted to reading and I’ll occasionally re-read one like
Citizen of the Galaxy for some of that sweet, sweet, nostalgia.
What
is your favorite part of the writing process?
For me the best part of writing is
that feeling you get when you’re really just in the zone. You start writing,
the world falls away and before you know it hours have passed and you’ve just
been pounding the keyboard in a near trancelike state. Truly an amazing feeling.
Describe
your latest book in 4 words.
interstellar
food court shenanigans.
Can
you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for
your writing?
Well
currently I’m splitting my time between helping to develop a mini-series for a
company(day job), working with an awesome narrator on the audiobook for
Starlite and writing the sequel to Starlte which will be a collection of short
stories centered around the main characters from this novel. After that, I have to write the second and third book in
The Geek series.
About the Author
I truly enjoy writing and it really never feels like work. Okay, mostly never feels like work.
Folks who have read my books have said they are definitely filled with words. These words are used in a very clever way to form sentences, which then form paragraphs until a page is just jammed packed with them. I do this repeatedly throughout my novels.
I am a lifelong lover of comic books, video games, science fiction and fantasy. My favorite authors include Robert Heinlein, William Gibson and Mark Twain.
Once the technology is perfected, I hope to own a robotic chimpanzee that will accompany me on many adventures. We will travel the globe solving crime, eating pie and saving the day.
I think it's safe to assume that we're gonna look pretty cool doing that.
