i am in your teeth, your bones, you r nails. i help your muscles contract. i help your heart beat. you need me. I am in every brick in the colosseum and in the walls of caves. I am in soil, sand, and statues. every living thing requires me to function. when the living die, when a building crumbles, i will continue on. i have many jobs, i live many lives. you call me Calcium.
indiscernible elements: Calcium explores the path a molecule can take through various stages of life and death - from the perspective of Calcium itself. through the use of detailed illustrations, poetry, and dialogue, author Korynn Newville creates a discussion around how humans can change the way they create the built environment to be more conscious of the wondrous systems at work in nature. if the same Calcium in a femur bone can be used in concrete to build a cathedral, a house, a sidewalk or can be recycled by a nearby plant or tree, how can humans purposefully help that process along? what would Calcium design if it had the choice? what would Calcium say if it could tell you its story.
Interview
What was your main drive to write this book?
I feel that the architecture
world is not approachable, or that people don’t quite understand what architects do. I wanted to
create something that could be accessible to a variety of people. Climate
change is a beast, and the built environment within architecture can make a large difference.
What do you hope readers will learn by reading
this book?
I hope they see the world
differently, are able to make new connections and feel inspired.
Did you do much research when planning this
book?
I did research on different topics, and researching how I came to Calcium. Every aspect of the
book is based on research and connecting different
aspects of the element. Even the brutalist buildings in the background of
the illustrations are a representation of buildings that have been torn down to
represent a new life they will have. Researching is what inspired me, I love
learning and creating connections off of substance.
I had to understand what Calcium does for organisms, for the planet, for
architectural products and so much more.
Did you have any main people who helped you in
the process of this book or influenced you to write it?
The Black Hat Press was who helped me along and believed
in the story. They helped me edit and move along with the story.
How long did this book take you to write from
initial thought to hitting publish?
3 years, from 2020 – 2023. It was a great ride, and I
enjoyed it.
Do you have plans to write more about this
topic or new topics?
I do, I hope to continue on and
connect more elements to Calcium.
