Imagine signing for a FedEx package early tomorrow morning. As you open the
contents, you discover a journal from your father. In his handwriting, you
read entries that share with you stories from his life, moments of your
childhood, and written conversations between the two of you captured on
pages for you to cherish. You would be slow to put this book down as
memories flood back into your mind. Many will make you smile, and all will
draw your attention to the gift that your dad has been in your life. This
journal is the beginning of such a treasure that will bond a father and
child together and leave a forever cherished gift.
INTERVIEW
What was your main drive to write this book?
My motivation to write Days with Dad came out of a passion for men’s ministry. My heart has always been to celebrate men that get it right as godly husbands and dads and to equip others that lack but are seeking the resources to become better at what God has called them to as men.
As a dad of five kids (ages 27 – 11) I have kept a journal with each of them. This has allowed us to navigate situation and to challenge them to grow while building a gift for them to look back on as they age and no longer have dad’s voice to help them navigate. In my own handwriting, they will be able to look back on the lessons, challenges, and memories of us sharing together in those journals.
What do you hope readers will learn by reading this book?
It is my desire that the dads and kids who take the risk and start this journey will discover the value in the closeness the book will bring for both dad and child.
Did you do much research when planning this book?
Most of my research for this book was to look back on the many journals I have shared with my five kids. I was content to recommend to fathers the value of the journal, but my oldest son (27) challenged me to see that many dads don’t know where to start and lack the ideas to get the journal started. He said, “dad, why don’t you help them take the guess work out of it?” That was all the motivation I needed to make this project a reality.
Did you have any main people who helped you in the process of this book or influenced you to write it?
Without a doubt, my own five kids have helped me see the value in this project. The entries that they have made in the journals is clear evidence that these journals hold value in the present and will inspire and remind my children that they had a dad who was madly in love with them their whole lives and though a whole host of seasons we’ve both grown through.
How long did this book take you to write from initial thought to hitting publish?
The Days with Dad journal project took me four months to get down on paper and six month to make it into a project worthy of others investing in.
Do you have plans to write more about this topic or new topics?
Recently, I have finished a new project that is on pre-sale now. It is called “Hello, I am Matthew”. The other projects that I am working on are geared towards dads and their sons and one that will be for fathers and their daughters, and a few others I can’t wait to share.
