In 1890s Missouri, secrets are a matter of survival.
Clairvoyant Sarah Richardson screams as her older sister Katherine is
forced into a straightjacket and thrust into a carriage bound for the St.
Louis City Lunatic Asylum. She is devastated to learn Katherine has been
blamed for her inadvertent role in an abused woman’s murder. Now, too
frightened to speak up, she hides the truth that it should have been her in
that carriage.
Sarah’s mounting guilt becomes too much, and she heads to St. Louis,
determined to regain her sister’s confidence and prove herself worthy
of forgiveness.
While working to heal their relationship, Sarah meets a timid housewife who
tries to hide her bruises. When troubling psychic visions of the woman begin
to affect her, she sees an opportunity to atone for her past mistakes.
Desperate to do whatever it takes to make things right, Sarah embarks on a
perilous journey that may cost her everything—including her own
life.
Interview
Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
I’d like young women especially to value their own worth and not base it on what others think or want of them. This is a major lesson that Sarah, my main character, learns.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
I’m more of a panster when it comes to writing the first draft which sometimes gets chaotic. It’s only when I can’t move forward at all, that I force myself to write an outline.
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I have 2 novels that ended up in a drawer. I’m not sure I have a favorite, because the first one was (is) very special to me, but it just wasn’t ready to be published. Of course, I love The Seer, and I’m extremely proud of it. I hope everyone who reads it loves it too!
If You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
Gosh, so many. I’d actually like my readers to give their thoughts on that! I’ll go with the majority.
When did you begin writing?
I began writing in 2001 when I took a Creative Writing course. I’ve been writing short stories ever since.
How long did it take to complete your first book?
I started The Seer the year I started my MFA in 2019. It was part of my creative thesis. It’s gone through several drafts since then.
Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
When I was in college, I was obsessed with Alice Walker and Toni Morrison. They had a huge impact on me when I first started.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Revising. I love when the first draft is finally down on paper and now the real fun of embellishing and revising begins!
Describe your latest book in 4 words.
How about if I describe my main character in 6 words?
Laura Ingalls meets Joan of Arc
Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?
I am working on a dual timeline novel about a newly divorced woman who decides to move to her grandmother’s hometown where she died young, and solve the mystery of why no one in the family talks about her.
