What was your main drive to write this book?
Our Lab, Tasha, was an amazing dog and I always wanted to
tell her story. When I read Dean Koontz’s book, a big little life, about
his Golden Retriever, I knew there was a place for Tasha’s story too.
What do you hope readers will learn by reading
this book?
I want readers to see the transforming power of love. We
changed Tasha’s life, rescuing her from the Animal Humane Society, and she
changed our lives with her love and devotion. She was quirky and fun but could
be serious too. She was the smartest dog I ever had.
Did you do much research when planning this
book?
This story is memoir. I researched the “usual” personality
of a Labrador Retriever. I wanted to know how unusual Tasha’s behavior was. I
share research on telepathy from Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming
Home by Rupert Sheldrake.
Did you have any main people who helped you in
the process of this book or influenced you to write it?
I received enormous support and assistance from the
writers at the White Bear Center for the Arts in White Bear Lake, MN. They had
many suggestions as the book progressed and were always supportive of it being
published.
How long did this book take you to write from
initial thought to hitting publish?
I thought about writing the book shortly after Tasha died
in 2009 and made notes to do so. I didn’t begin writing the book until 2020
during the pandemic and it was published three years later.
Do you have plans to write more about this
topic or new topics?
I am currently working on a novel. It’s early, but I
laughed when I realized that to date every family has either a cat or a dog!
