To Die For is a harrowing look into the life of a narcissist who refuses to take accountability for the damage she inflicts.
High school senior Dei Fields appears completely harmless, but she has a keen instinct for manipulation. When she first sets eyes on hot star athlete Mika St. John, she’s determined to have him … and Dei always gets what she wants. There are only three obstacles: Mika’s friends, his family, and his girlfriend. But Dei isn’t afraid to destroy relationships to satisfy her fantasies.
In a matter of weeks, she love-bombs Mika into thinking he has found his soulmate, but when Dei’s plans go awry, everything changes—including her identity. Will Dei get what she wants this time? Or will she finally get what she deserves?
Is There a
Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
Yes. In “To Die For,” I want my readers to learn
to see and recognize the red flags of narcissistic personality disorder. And
that they can and should walk away from a controlling or abusive relationship.
Is there
anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
I try to make each character three-dimensional
even at short acquaintance, with some kind of background or context even for
the supporting character.
How many
books have you written and which is your favorite?
I’ve written three books, and as they say, it’s difficult to
pick among your children, but “The Fallen” was the most deeply emotionally
involving, as it involves so many spiritual and historical themes, as does the
sequel which I just finished writing.
If You had
the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
For “To Die For,” I can see Ariana Greenblatt as Dei because she
looks like she can play the right age and has the emotional range.
When did
you begin writing?
I began writing skits, poems and short stories in grade school, but my professional writing career
probably began when I was working in cable television as a producer, researcher
and writer. The idea for my first novel came to me in my 20s, but it was only
during COVID that I finally had the leisure to put all my energies into writing
what was finally published in 2024 as “The Fallen.”
How long
did it take to complete your first book?
Most of the novel was written in a year and a
half but I had already written the beginning and several key chapters years
before.
Did you
have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
I had many favorite writers growing up, including
Mary Renault, Oscar Wilde, and Edith Pargeter.
What is
your favorite part of the writing process?
Finishing a
particularly difficult passage to my own satisfaction
Describe
your latest book in 4 words.
A suspenseful cautionary
tale
Can you
share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your
writing?
I was inspired to write “To Die For” because I
have seen first-hand the damage that can be inflicted in the name of love, when
a relationship is based on one person’s need to control another. A narcissist
will use love-bombing, isolating others (“we don’t need anyone else!”), the
accusation – or the threat - of cheating, and other forms of emotional abuse,
which can be just as harmful as physical. I hope my book will help others
recognize the pattern.
I’m just beginning the editing process for my
sequel to “The Fallen,” which picks up in Morocco in 1990. It continues to
imagine a world where paranormal influences shape current events, with the
emphasis on love, compassion and hope which are so badly needed in today’s
world.
A theme that runs through all my writing is how
much our individual choices matter.
