Chapter 20 – THE STARVING TIME

Winter came, howling and blasting its cold breath through Jamestown, ripping the remaining dried leaves from the trees, tearing at our thin clothes and drawing vital heat out of everything alive. It was then that the first of the deaths began; at first, two or three a day from cold and hunger. We conducted funeral services for them until they became too numerous and the services no longer seemed important. Men who helped to bury their friends one day would themselves be dead the next.
The dying were stripped of their clothes before they had breathed their last. Their quarters were stripped of anything that could be eaten or worn. They were buried at night outside of the fort, quickly, often flung in their graves with little more care than if they had been stray dogs.
