Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
Dinosaurs are a
gateway to science, and I hope my book 50 Dinosaur Tales will entertain
and educate readers, and get more people interested in paleontology and science
in general.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Getting started!
I hate staring at the blank page, and though I often have lots of story ideas,
sometimes it’s hard to flesh them out.
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I’ve written 11
books so far, and I think 50 Dinosaur Tales is my favorite. It’s been 5
years in the making (and features dinosaurs that have been discovered over the
last 5 years). I had a lot of fun imagining how these animals lived and behaved
based on what paleontologists know about them so far.
If You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
I’m not sure this
one applies, since 50 Dinosaur Tales is a compilation of short stories,
and the characters are dinosaurs, but if I were to include a narrator, I’d love
to have Jeff Goldblum! I’m a big fan of his—especially his role in Jurassic
Park.
When did you begin writing?
I’ve always loved writing. I have that typical story of
writing short books in elementary school, and having a great time coming up
with new ideas. Now I write about software for a tech company by day, and dinosaurs
by night (and talk about dinosaurs on I Know
Dino, a weekly dinosaur podcast I co-produce with my husband).
How long did it take to complete your first book?
Not long—about 30 days (during a
NaNoWriMo). It wasn’t very good, so I didn’t try to do anything else with it,
but I was able to prove to myself I could write at least 50,000 words. On
average, now I’d say it takes me a few months to write, and another few months
to edit and market my books.
Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
I’ve always loved writing, so I
don’t think there’s any one author who inspired me (I enjoy reading all genres).
But for 50 Dinosaur Tales, paleontologist Bob Bakker and his book Raptor
Red definitely inspired me. It
tells the story of a Utahraptor, told through the eyes of the dinosaur.
I loved the details about her life with the storytelling aspect, and I wanted
to see more of this type of dinosaur fiction out there.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
The editing. Once
I have my initial thoughts down, I really enjoy developing them further and finding
ways to make my scenes come more to life.
Describe your latest book in 4 words.
Educational,
entertaining, creative, exciting
Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the
future for your writing?
I have a few things in the works. One is a middle grade
novel about two atoms that meet at the Big Bang and live together for a few
billion years (and yes they get to hang out with dinosaurs). Another book in
the works is the first in a series tentatively called Dino Wars. It’s like Game
of Thrones but all the main characters are dinosaurs and it’s set in the
Jurassic.
