Blog Tour: The Merchant of Venice Beach by Celia Bonaduce

Date Published: 8/1/2013
Contemporary Romance

The Rollicking Bun--Home of the Epic Scone--is the center of Suzanna Wolf's life. Part tea shop, part bookstore, part home, it's everything she's ever wanted right on the Venice Beach boardwalk, including partnership with her two best friends from high school, Eric and Fernando. But with thirty-three just around the corner, suddenly Suzanna wants something more--something strictly her own. Salsa lessons, especially with a gorgeous instructor, seem like a good start--a harmless secret, and just maybe the start of a fling. But before she knows it, Suzanna is learning steps she never imagined--and dancing her way into confusion.

Excerpt
Suzanna was in a panic. After several futile attempts at looking for shoes on-line, it became clear she was never going to have enough alone time to really investigate the subject properly. All the research she did manage just brought about more questions, not less and Suzanna had to admit that she really needed some expert help in finding the right shoes. Now her first salsa lesson was looming, and she had somehow not managed to find the time to go to Dante’s Dancewear. She didn’t know exactly what she wanted, but she knew she couldn’t show up at the studio in the wrong shoes…whatever that meant!

Slipping away from The Bun as soon as the afternoon tea crowd had settled down, Suzanna pointed her Smart Car towards Westwood Boulevard, where Dante’s Dancewear beckoned. Suzanna walked noiselessly into the store, ready to appear confident and assured. After all, she didn’t know everything, but she knew she wanted “character shoes.”

“You don’t want character shoes,” said the stone-faced skeleton behind the counter.

It’s times like these when Suzanna remembered why she never left her comfort zone. When she was managing The Bun or hanging out with Fernando and Eric, curve balls like this were never hurled at her.  The little self-doubts pricked at her like tiny toothpicks, but she pulled myself together, arched an eyebrow and breathed… “Oh?”

“A character shoe has a leather sole. You want a suede sole for classes.”

“Oh,” she paused emphatically. And then, because she couldn’t stand not knowing, added, “Why?”

“The suede glides on the wood floor,” she replied, “and a suede soled shoe is lighter and easier to dance in for long periods of time.”

It took Suzanna a moment to let go of her character-shoes-dream, but since her character-shoes-dream was only about a week old, she found she could easily replace it with the new, more dance-centric suede-sole dance-shoes dream. Because, make no mistake, she planned on dancing for long periods of time!

She asked the skeleton to show her some suede-soled dance shoes that would lend themselves to sensuous salsa.

“What color?” She asked.

Red? Too showy. White? Too virginal.

“Black!” Suzanna said.

“You don’t want black.”

Suzanna left Dante’s Dancewear a little more unsteady and a lot less sure of herself than when she entered, but she had to congratulate herself.  She had bought her dance shoes.

They were beige.

Apparently in the dance world, one referred to “shoes” in the singular. You bought a “shoe” and somehow your other foot magically got shod. According to the skeleton, one did not want a shoe that stood out. One wanted a shoe that blended in. Suzanna argued that the whole point of dance lessons was that she was damn SICK of fitting in.  The skeleton replied that she wanted her form and herself to stand out – not her feet.

“Beige hides footwork mistakes,” she said.

So Suzanna bought beige.

Suzanna clicked off the alarm in her Smart Car and hid her clandestine purchase in what was passing for a trunk in the vehicle that was passing for a car. Suzanna wondered briefly if the hot dance instructor would be impressed with her wise choice of a beige shoe. She looked down at her iPhone calendar – she’d find out in less than 4 hours.

Blog Tour: Vendetta Nation by Sara Furlong - Burr

Date Published: 10/18/2013
Dystopian

What if you gave up everything you knew and loved for a lie?
Nearly one year ago, Celaine Stevens made the choice to leave her life behind to join The Epicenter, an organization charged with bringing down The Man in Black - a terrorist and the one responsible for the murder of her entire family. Battling conflicting emotions and the pain her decision caused, Celaine tells herself that her sacrifices will all have been worth it when The Man in Black is finally apprehended.
But, instead of hunting the elusive entity, Celaine and her partner Ian Grant find themselves preparing for a war looming on the horizon. Angered by President Brook’s ever-tightening restrictions, a rebellion has formed, leading the charge against the President and anyone who stands in their way. Caught in the middle, Celaine and Ian are forced to choose sides, having to decide whether to align themselves with the rebellion, whose motives they question, or obey the orders given to them by an organization they are steadily growing to distrust.
A war is sparked by deceit, new alliances are formed, an unexpected love begins to blossom, and true identities are revealed in Vendetta Nation, the second installment of the Enigma Black trilogy.

A fine mist fell from the sky, but did nothing to dampen the spirit of the crowd nor diminish the gloating smile on Brooks’ face. Even from within the confines of my suit, I could feel the chill in the air. It sent a shiver down my spine. The resistance was coming, I could sense it, and the anxiety I felt preceding it was unnerving. I glanced over at the soldiers again. They remained stiff, unnerved. Could they sense it, too, or were they where it was all coming from in the first place? Again, I found myself fixated on them. They were all too perfect. In their coordinated movements, their lack of emotion, their robotic nature.

Their robotic nature.

Then it hit me. “Your brainwaves are picked up by receptors in your helmet while you’re in the simulation so, yes, in a sense I can control them.”  That conversation Ian and I had with Cameron while outside the simulation room the day he manipulated my body. Was it possible that this was occurring on a much grander scale? I imagine that if Cameron could come up with something so diabolical, Brooks probably had someone in his back pocket who could trump it tenfold…or even Cameron himself. Of course, The Epicenter was funded by the Brooks’ administration. It only made sense that their investment produce dividends somehow. I felt the rage boiling from within the very depths of my soul. If my suspicions were true, what else had we been lied to about?

Brooks’ sudden silence broke my attention away from the soldiers. He stood, staring out on the horizon, his expression remarkably unchanged, perhaps even a little relieved as though he’d been anxiously awaiting a party guest who’d arrived fashionably late. Ian’s relaxed form hardened in my peripheral vision. His body was already preparing itself for a fight. A gasp escaped from the lips of most in the crowd. On the sidelines, the soldiers came to life, awakening as though someone had flipped their switch to ‘on’.

Our worst fears were coming to fruition. Tonight, there would be a battle where clear sides would be drawn once and for all. Where true superheroes would come to life and blood would stain the ground.

Sara Furlong-Burr
Sara "Furlong" Burr was born on February 1, 1982, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. At an early age, when it became apparent she wouldn't have the luxury of skating through life on her looks or athletic prowess, Sara found her true passion in writing. While in fifth grade, she wrote her first "novel"(whose name escapes her at the moment) about five friends who win a trip to Hawaii. At ninety-something pages, it was her crowning achievement during her childhood (you may now begin drawing your own conclusions on how sad a childhood Sara actually had).

After focusing much of her adult life on her family and career as a paralegal, Sara found the voices in her head becoming unrelenting and she returned to her true passion. Currently, she's working on the third book in the Enigma Black trilogy (due out in 2014). She's also tossing around ideas for a chick-lit book about two ill-fated lovers (Lord, help her).

When she's not writing, Sara enjoys reading (pretty much a given), attempting to garden, shopping (prerequisite to being a woman), and spending time with her family and friends who somehow manage to tolerate her numerous disappearances propagated by infrequent bouts of inspiration.

                                                                                   The Boy
Before he became the man in the mask- a man with anger that burned in his ears- he was a sweet and sensitive boy with a father as mean as a rabid badger.
The boy was seven the day his father came home drunk, angry that his lunch wasn’t waiting for him on the table. He was a massive man with long arms, meaty fingers and perpetual redness in his cheeks. His meanness was as dense as swamp water, and his breath reeked with bitterness and rage.  He glared hatefully at the boy and thumped him hard on the back of his head, yelling,
“Now you get outside, boy and clean up them weeds! I don’t want to see no weeds in my yard. Get a move on.”
The boy’s stomach squirmed as he hurried outside. In the glaring mid-day sun, he did his best, but nothing could satisfy his father.
Stumbling onto the covered patio, the giant man threw open a chest filled with the treasures of boys. He dug like an animal, throwing baseballs and mitts, mallets for croquet, and wooden bats pitted and dark. He shoveled wildly until the contents of the chest lay scattered and meaningless across the cement porch.
Picking up the empty chest he slammed it down hard beyond the shade of the overhang, leaving it empty in the sun.
“Is that the best you can do, boy?” he said as he spat tobacco juice in the dirt.
In two strides he reached the boy and snatched him by the back of his shirt, hoisting him easily off the ground. The red-and- white striped fabric pulled tight against the boy’s narrow chest.  The father dropped the terrified child into the footlocker and slammed it closed. His breath came in hard gasps as he spotted a curved wire and twisted it through the shiny hardware clasp ensuring the chest couldn’t be opened from the inside.
“That’ll do it,” he growled as he wiped the spit from the corner of his mouth.
The boy whimpered and cried, “I’ll do it better, Daddy, I swear. Please, let me out. Daddy, please, I’m scared of the dark,” he whispered.
By the time the boy’s mother, Bernadette, rescued her youngest son from the dark and sweltering chest, he was limp and nearly unconscious. She carried him into the house and cradled him in her lap, wiping his head with a cool cloth and feeding him water. She whispered in the boy’s ear,
“You got to stay away from him now, you hear me? Oh my lord,” she murmured, “please God, don’t let him kill my boy.”
But it wouldn’t be the last time the boy was locked in the chest, and with each cruel encounter the hateful intent of his father would begin to creep into the boy’s own heart and begin to grow.

Jessina Landi has a three-foot radius comfort zone. The last man she let into it cost her a lot more than a broken heart. And the huge debt she owes for that trust, well, it’s due. If she takes Chase Lennox's up on his offer, it’s sure to cover the bill.
There’s an annulment waiting at the end of their rainbow… well, that’s if they can get through the next two weeks without consummating the marriage.

Excerpt

"Finish getting ready. We're outta here in a few minutes.” He turned his back to her.
Jessina struggled to recover from the total body meltdown he’d so easily triggered. "Are we heading back to your apartment?"
"Yes," he responded just as he disappeared from the doorway.
"Good." She raised her voice. "You can drop me off at the bus stop then."
Chase's head swayed back in the doorway. "Come again?"
"I'm going home, but I'll be back in time for Caplin's arrival on Thursday."
He stepped back into the room. "Why do you want to go home?"
The question caught her off guard. She'd assumed he'd be pleased to be rid of her. Nonetheless, telling him the truth wasn't an option. "As you said, the only reason we needed to spend time together was so I could get to know you, so we can convince Caplin we're married."
His forehead wrinkled. "And you feel like you know me?"
"Well enough to pull off a bullshit marriage, yes."
"Hmm." He rubbed his chin, the intensity of his stare holding her captive. She clung to those dark eyes, waiting for him to say something. He dropped his hand and took a step toward her.
"I don't want you to go." His low, husky words resonated in her ears.
Her body hesitated, heart skipped, and nerves stammered. All of her senses failed her. She couldn’t have heard him right. "What?"
"There are a few more things you need to know about me in order to successfully pull this off, Jessina."
Every single one of her senses came back to life as he moved closer.
"Will you stay just one more night?" He stopped in front of her. "So I can show them to you?"
"What?" Heat flushed through her body once more. "What sort of things?"
Dark, ravishing eyes dropped to her mouth as he drew a finger down the side of her cheek. It trailed along her neck, gently grazing her shoulder and caressing the length of her arm. "The sort of things I would do with my real wife." He looked back up at her, his hand now settled on her hip. The weight of his touch caused her stomach to clench with desire. His hand shifted to the small of her back, and her next breath got caught in her throat. "I want to show you how my wife would make me feel when I'm this close to her." He applied light pressure with his hand to her back, and the space between them descended. Their bodies became one.
"Chase…" His name fell from her lips in a near whisper when his hardness pressed into her tight-with-desire belly.
"Jessina…" he hissed back in a throaty murmur…

They fall in love and nothing is the same after that, especially when Torr returns Wintra home to Cree. The truth comes to light about many things, especially one long held secret that changes everything for Wintra.

EXCERPT

Wintra’s eyes shot open and her breath caught in her throat, preventing her from screaming, and screaming was exactly what she wanted to do. She stared at the face only inches from hers and wondered if she was suffering a nightmare. It was as if she was staring at two different men; one a demon and one an angel. A thin scar ran down the left side of the man’s face from above his eye to his chin, while his right side was untouched. His eyes were a piercing blue color that sent an icy chill through her and his large hand weighed heavily across her mouth. But it was the size of him covering the length of her that frightened her the most. Even through his garments and fur coverings she could feel his hard muscles. He was a powerfully built man, and she had no chance against him.

How to Avoid the Rejection Blues

Let’s face it. Rejection bites. Whether it happen when you ask someone out on a date (ouch!) or get that dreaded e-mail from the potential employer of your dreams, rejection hurts! It’s no different for the writer.
Imagine spending weeks, months or even years on your latest work. You’ve gone over your manuscript for the billionth time, combing through every word on every page, searching feverishly for discrepancies, loopholes and grammatical errors. If you used Microsoft Word, you’ve made sure that there are no red or green squiggly lines beneath your words! You might have presented your manuscript to your closest friends for review. (Or if you’re paranoid like me, only mom is allowed to read it.) When you’re finally pleased, you scope out different agencies who are open to submissions and try as best as possible to meet their requirements. You mutter angrily under your breath when you read that responses take six to eight weeks…or longer! Then the wait begins. You jump for joy when you get an e-mail the next day, only to realize that it was simply a confirmation e-mail. Thanks for sending us your manuscript. We will reply with 6 to 8 weeks. If you don’t hear back from us, it is safe to assume that we have decided not to go with your manuscript and will be using it as confetti for our next office party. (Okay, so maybe I made up the last part. Besides, most submissions are electronic.)
Six to eight weeks later, an e-mail comes in from an agent. You take a deep breath to brace yourself for the worst and guess what? The worst happens.
The extent of pain from rejection letters from agents and publishers can vary. Some rejection letters seem generic. Thank you for your submission but we have decided not to use this manuscript. Others, have a kinder aura. We’ve reviewed your manuscript and although it is interesting and well written, it is not what we’re looking for. Best of luck! Then there are the calloused rejections where you wonder if the person responding is a red demon hired by the devil, sitting at a red desk and using bolts of red lighting to write. Those are the ones that rip your manuscript to shreds! Not interesting or engaging. Dull characters. Vague plot. Boring.
So what can you do to avoid the rejection blues? Well, besides bracing yourself by remaining humble, there isn’t much one can do. What I mean when I say ‘humble’ is that you should understand that there’s nothing wrong with having confidence in your work, but be mindful that someone out there isn’t going to like it. There is no work out there where everyone has given it two or more thumbs up. The best thing you can do is to continue writing. If you’re still stuck, pour that awful feeling into the heart of your next character and see how strong they will be. Happy writing!

Five Step Guide to Surviving the Afterlife

So you figured out you're dead, now what?

You're not in Kansas anymore. You're no longer an Unknown. But you're still you. You were always you. You will always be. Remember this! Enjoy your time. Realizing you're dead is a big step is a big step in any soul's life cycle. You have left the little world of Earth and have entered into the big world of the afterlife, where you will be respected more, have more spiritual work, and have more things to do. It's all endless. Sometimes your experiences here will be intense and some will be fun. It will all be rewarding. A truly an amazing learning experience in your life cycle. Make the most of this time. The precious time you have in the afterlife will stick with you forever! Believe me, people, situations, experiences will be forever cemented to your soul. You will never forget, at least not on all levels. The afterlife may be difficult for some, so if you don't know what to do, read on!

1- Make friends! Find others you may already know. Learn from everyone as much as you possible can. Make plans to hang out with your friends. Find others you trust that you can call on for advice in during your journey. You're only alone if you choice to be. Maybe you'll meet up with an old soul mate. Maybe you'll be reunited with a previous relative.  Neighbor. Boss. Maybe you'll meet someone new entirely that you will in turn spend many lifetimes with.  Or maybe not. Either way try to be open to meeting and interacting with new souls.

2- Ask questions. This is a great way to not only interact with others but also a wonderful way to learn and become more comfortable within your environment.

3- Explore your inner self. You've moved on to the afterlife so you're aware of what's important to you. Dive in deeper and ask yourself why you're the way you are. Most importantly continue to love yourself.  Pamper yourself.

4- Get your assignment as soon as possible! Go to the big building in the sky and take that test! Maybe you'll be a Healer. A Keeper of truths. A Spirit guide for those who are just plain struggling. Be the best spirit guide you can! A routine can help if you're struggling and missing someone.  With each new charge you help, will gain confidence and feel better and better!

5-Avoid getting into trouble and follow the rules! Here in the afterlife, there is but one rule: You can not make direct contact with the Unknowns. It's not healthy for you and its especially not healthy for them. No matter how badly you want to be with someone don't ever interfere and attempt to force someone to realize their state. When they're ready, they'll know. You must believe this. Be patient. Be kind. Be true.

Best of luck to you on your continued journey!

Blog Tour: Heart-Shaped Emblor by Alaina Ewing

Young Adult Paranormal Romance/ Sci-Fi
Date Published: 10/11/2013

Hidden powers. Otherworldly boyfriends. FORBIDDEN SECRETS.
For Aislinn Moore, attending college at seventeen isn’t a big deal. Not when compared to the difficulties associated with seeing ethereal beings and having prophetic dreams.
As Aislinn learns to surmount the obstacles of her talents, she awakens something inside herself—an ancient memory, long forgotten. She senses there are reasons for her gifts, but remains unable to understand them.
When Alexander Welch enters her life, she learns of the Ewlishash—the hope bringers—and thinks she may have found her answer. Alexander is sexy, sweet, and his talents are like something straight out of a Sci-Fi flick. Aislinn wonders if she may be like him, but the more she tries to fit his mold, the more her instincts scream that her destiny holds something even greater.

Excerpt
The dream of Alexander had me rattled, and now that I had a chance to
introduce myself, my apprehension seemed to be getting the better of me.
The idea of him standing over me, watching me sleep as I dreamed of him,
made me tremble.
I wanted to believe that seeing him in my room was still part of the
dream, but the truth was, I didn’t know. That was why I needed Hope, why I
couldn’t talk to him just yet. I needed to know if my dream had anything to
do with what I’d asked my spirit guide.
