The Fall of Mu is the captivating first book of the Galactic Pact series. This multi-generational epic blends science fiction and historical fiction to transport you to a pre-historic era where humanity built an interstellar empire. With vivid scenes, rich characters, and chapters that defy expectations, this book takes you on an exciting journey across the stars.
Michael is sixteen when his homeland is destroyed in a nuclear attack, his parents are murdered, and he is the one responsible for ensuring his people's survival. Throughout Michael's struggles with alien overlords, apathetic allies and godlike creatures, we follow him as he discovers what it takes to lead in a dystopian universe and how hard it can be to cling onto hope in times of despair. But this is only the beginning!
Is There a Message in Your Novel (The Fall of Mu)
That You Want Readers to Grasp?
Sacrifice
is required to regain lost liberty.
Is there anything you find particularly
challenging in your writing?
When
to stop writing. Fortunately, I have devised a method.
As
the manuscript is written, I involve critique partners. They say lovely things
like so what, who cares, and what does this mean?
The
early version of the manuscript goes to an editor that bleeds all over it (imagine
red ink on paper and a scathing analysis).
After
appeasing the blood god, I am happy with it. But who cares? I need readers to
be happy with it! So on to a range of beta readers where I discover the truth.
Now it’s time for me to bleed.
I then try to forget about
it for a month or two and reread it, pretending I have never read the book
before. If I am entertained, if it’s a page-turner, then I am satisfied.
How many books have you written, and which is
your favorite?
I
have published a short story (Escape from Emerald A.I.) and a debut novel (The
Fall of Mu) which is part 1 of at least 4 in a series. Part 2 of 4 (Rise of the
Keepers) is over half written. For me, The Fall of Mu is my favorite, but as I
write the rest of Rise of the Keepers it’s competing for the favorite position.
The appeal of The Fall of Mu is the triumph of perseverance, while Rise of the
Keepers struggles with the consequences of such triumph.
If You had the chance to cast your main character
from
Karl
Urban would be fantastic as my main protagonist, Michael Floyd, in my debut novel,
The Fall of Mu. In terms of the roles Karl has played, imagine Michael as the stubborn,
rugged, and quietly suffering Judge Dredd, the quirky but passionate Bones of
Star Trek and Star Trek Beyond, and the strong, faithful leader Éomer, Rohan’s third
Marshal of the Mark in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
When did you begin writing?
Five
years ago, the universe that I write in came to me in a dream so compelling
that I stayed up three days, without sleep to document it and outline two
novels that take place in that realm.
I
realized that I needed to tell others about it. I quit my job and spent over a
year learning how to write fiction and began what would become a lifelong
passion for researching science and pre-history.
I
then wrote and published a short story (Escape from the Emerald A.I.), went
back to work, and in the evenings and weekends started turning that dream story
into a manuscript. I quickly realized that the two were incompatible for me at
that point in my life and took another break from work.
Two
years later, after following the events I outlined above concerning critique
partners and beta readers, I had a dang good manuscript!
I
went back to work and in the evenings, published that manuscript (The Fall of
Mu), and continued to write the sequel (Rise of the Keepers).
How long did it take to complete your first book?
Five
years, see above.
Did you have an author who inspired you to become
a writer?
In
order of impact, the authors that have inspired me most are Frank Herbert, Robert
Heinlein, and Isaac Asimov. Honorable mention goes to Orson Scott Card.
What is your favorite part of the writing
process?
You
know you are enjoying what you are doing when you look up at the clock and
realize what seemed like 30 minutes was four hours. That is what happens when I
write the first draft of any scene. During that time, the world around me blurs
and all that remains is the story that is playing out before me. I take my
time, rewind, zoom in, listen, zoom out, and then try to describe what I see, hear,
feel, and sometimes smell. After that, it’s just work, work, work.
Describe your latest book in 4 words.
Liberty
requires eternal vigilance.
Can you share a little bit about your current
work or what is in the future for your writing?
The
Fall of Mu is my debut novel that starts a series of novels with interactions
between good and evil that evolve over generations to an intergalactic scale.
The protagonist of this novel, Michael, is sixteen when his homeland is
destroyed, his parents are murdered, and he becomes the one responsible for
ensuring his people’s survival. Throughout Michael’s struggles with tyrannical
overlords, apathetic allies, and godlike creatures, he discovers what it takes
to lead in a dystopian universe and how hard it can be to cling to hope in
times of despair.
The
next novel in that series is Rise of the Keepers. While The Fall of Mu stands
by itself, it leaves one to wonder about the future of the characters you come
to love. Rise of the Keepers provides answers and lays the groundwork for the
rest of the series that will evolve into a grand space opera.
