Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
Not
really any message as such at least not that I’m aware of. I tend to focus on
fairly light, at least in relative terms, escapism.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
As
I find my plots getting more and more intricate, probably the most challenging
thing is the timelines, in other words making sure that I have days, dates, and
times consistent so there are no continuity glitches.
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
This is a difficult question to answer because “favorite”
can mean so many things. It can mean favorite plot, favorite time while
writing, or most challenging to pull off. I’m going to go with the most challenging/
gratifying to see all the way through to completion, and with that criterion it
would probably be And the Devil Walks Away, which is the third in the series
that began with The Group.
If You had the chance to cast your main character from
Well,
although he’s a bit older now, for the main character of Ron Green I’d say
someone in the mold of Tom Hanks, or someone else who has that “everyman”
quality.
When did you begin writing?
At
the age of nineteen. There was one day I had the day off from work and got
really bored, so for some reason I pulled out my mom’s old typewriter and began
pounding out a short story. Never managed to sell it, though, as it was really
bad.
How long did it take to complete your first book?
I’m going to selectively answer this. I wrote four
books that never saw publication, and my first published “book” was in the form
of an e-book novelette. However, my first published novel, The Group, took a
solid year from conception to finished product.
Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
For sure, Arthur C. Clarke, the old-time science
fiction writer. I was exposed to him at a young age, sixth grade or
thereabouts, and was captivated by how he could tell a complete, twisty story
in no more than eight or nine pages. Although I don’t write science fiction,
the succinctness of his storytelling ability is something to aspire to.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
The
snark answer would be: finishing. But the true answer would be first drafts.
Just sitting down and creating something out of thin air is by far the most
carefree part of it all.
Describe your latest book in 4 words.

Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the
future for your writing?
A few weeks ago, I sent in to Camel Press book #5
in the Sam Quinton Private Eye Series, so I’m waiting to start the editing
process on that. I have one more Quinton book left on my current contract with
Camel and will probably begin drafting that before long. I’ve also had an idea
in mind for a couple of decades of a really ambitious, sprawling crime novel to
write, and now that I pulled the plug in May and retired from teaching, I’ve
begun drafting an outline for that one. Finally, there’s one of my earlier
novels that never found a publisher that I still have hopes for, and I may drag
it out soon and give it another going over.
