Following the tumultuous course of American history in the mid-nineteenth century, here is the story of Nathan Butterfield-a preacher's son whose faith in God is all but destroyed as he experiences the loss of loved ones and friends and witnesses his country being torn apart by the brutal realities of slavery. As the nation descends into a bloody civil war, Nathan is drawn into the conflict and further embittered and traumatized by the savagery that surrounds him, though several people try to help him see that a gracious and loving God is still to be found. Only through a life-changing battlefield experience does Nathan finally see the staggering depth and beauty of God's amazing grace.

INTERVIEW
What was your main drive to write this book?
My main drives in writing this book were to glorify God, to spread the Gospel, and to share my love of history.

What do you hope readers will learn by reading this book?
I hope that readers will learn about the power of God's amazing grace, and a deeper love of history.

Did you do much research when planning this book?
I did research as I went, using Wikipedia to fact check.  I also drew on my own experiences as a therapist and a Civil War reenactor.

Did you have any main people who helped you in the process of this book or influenced you
to write it?
The publishing team at Lucid Books were an amazing help to me through the whole process, and they still are!

How long did this book take you to write from initial thought to hitting publish?
I wrote the short story maybe ten years ago.  I decided to start writing the book shoryly after my father died in 2017.  I finished the manuscript in the fall of 2022.
