After foiling the political ambitions of a would-be American dictator,
time-traveling lovers Marta Hamilton and Marshall Grissom return to their
life in the Caribbean only to confront the murder of a friend and inherit
responsibility for a gutsy 10-year old boy. Throughout their unlikely and
tumultuous relationship, Marta has harbored suspicions that her
time-traveling companion is not being honest with her. Is Marshall really
the bumbling, good-hearted klutz she has come to love and trust? Or is he
the cunning, cold-blooded assassin Gillis Kerg suspects him to be? In this
fifth tale of physics, lust and greed, a bizarre parallel universe and a
monstrous product of artificial intelligence will impose a costly
consequence requiring both Marta and Marshall to face the truth of her most
haunting question: “Who are you, Marshall Grissom?”
Interview
Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
I write to entertain. And I write humor and satire. Satire involves subtext, which is where messages are hidden. But I try to keep that subtle. If readers find a message, that’s fine. But as long as they’re entertained, I feel like I’m doing my job.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
The more books I write, the more difficult conceptionalizing a new book becomes. A writer must come up with a concept he or she wants to live with for the next year to eighteen months or their lives.
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
Quantum Consequence is my eighth book—seven novels and one work of non-fiction. My favorite will probably always be Section Roads, my debut novel located in the little Eastern New Mexico town where I grew up. There’s a significant element of biography in that book.
If You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
D.J. Qualls would be a great Marshall, but he would need to be taller.
When did you begin writing?
I’ve written since junior high school. I was a newspaper reporter for thirty years. But I’ve only been serous about writing novel-length books since I turned 60—which was 13 years ago.
How long did it take to complete your first book?
From concept to execution, about 25 years. From the time I actually started writing it down, about three years.
Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
The book that most made me want to write a novel was something called Red Sky a morning, written in the 70’s by a New Mexico author named Richard Bradford. My biggest influences of style are Douglas Adams, Christopher Moore, Tom Robbins and Mark Twain.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Fine tuning after the first draft is done.
Describe your latest book in 4 words.
Time travel and absurdity
Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?
I am working on a sixth book in my Tales of Physics, Lust and Greed series, but right now I’m mostly focused on learning screen writing.
