Tendrils of darkness reach from the depths of her mind and shadows flicker
around every corner. Still reeling from Raven’s horrific display of
power, Kari suffers in silence.
When Guine finally returns with stories of a mirror that could help him
with his problems, Kari finds herself hoping that maybe, just maybe, it
could help with hers as well.
With the promise of a relatively straightforward outing, Kari, Ari, and
Guine set forth to find the mirror.
But what they find beyond the looking-glass threatens not only Kari and her
sanity, but also the world she loves.
INTERVIEW
Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
The message in The Storm Breaks would be along the lines of “Don’t let the darkness consume you.” Rely on your friends, your supports, and don’t give up even when it seems like things are completely lost.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Between action scenes will always be my bane. I love writing the drama and violence, but leading up to it and having to figure out what actions characters make when nothing is really going on is so difficult!
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I’ve written more than 10 books at this point! In the Demon Storm series, this will be the 6th. My favorite changes frequently, but pretty consistently I land on the second book, Storm & Shadow. Raven and Kari’s meeting and interactions are so very dear to me.
If you had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
I’d pick Jennifer Lawrence for Kari every time. Her gruff voice is absolutely perfect and I know she can do the pain (very a la Katniss Everdeen).
When did you begin writing?
I started writing when I was about 10, now more than twenty years ago. It was originally Pokemon characters, then a love for anime and video games, and now Kari is here!
How long did it take to complete your first book?
From very first draft to publication, Birth of the Storm took me twenty years. There was a writing hiatus in there, then figuring out what I wanted to do with the story, THEN learning about publishing…it was a whole journey. But I wouldn’t change a thing about it.
Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
Several. Edith Pattou and Tamora Pierce were HUGE for me when I was starting to write and build worlds. There was something very special about Hero’s Song and The Magic Circle series that did things for me and my soul.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
My favorite part will always be the heavy scenes. When a character is broken, crying, begging, about to lose it all – I love that more than anything else.
Describe your latest book in 4 words.
Pain and trauma abound.
Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?
Currently I am considering some rewrites on a prequel story while I wait on edits for book 7. While I love Kari and her series, I’m very excited to move onto some other characters I’ve had to set aside for a long time now.
About the Author
Valerie Storm was raised in Tucson, Arizona. Growing up, she fell in love
with everything fantasy. When she wasn’t playing video games, she was
writing. By age ten, she began to write her own stories as a way to escape
reality. When these stories became a full-length series, she considered the
path to sharing with other children & children-at/heart looking for a
place to call home.
