Educational Disobedience is a compelling and transformative guide for
parents, educators, and advocates committed to reimagining traditional
educational systems. Drawing from her extensive experience as an educator,
homeschool advocate, and law enforcement professional, Dr. Mabry challenges
the conventional paradigms of schooling that often fail underserved and
marginalized students. With practical advice and deeply personal insights,
she explores how parents can use homeschooling to reclaim their
children’s education.
Dr. Mabry argues that educational disobedience is not about defiance but
about empowerment—empowering parents to resist systems that perpetuate
inequity and disempower children, particularly those from at-risk
communities. She provides a roadmap for creating individualized, flexible
learning paths that focus on student well-being, literacy, and personal
growth. The book also highlights how cooperative educational models, like
her own Tiers Free Homeschool Cooperative, can serve as community-driven
alternatives to traditional schooling.
Educational Disobedience is not only a call to action but a beacon of hope
for parents seeking to revolutionize their children’s learning
experience. It’s a must-read for those ready to challenge the status
quo and advocate for educational justice.
INTERVIEW
What was your main drive to write this book?
My lived experiences of navigating systemic barriers while advocating for my children were the main driving force when I published the first edition in 2018. When I published the second edition in 2024, my driving force was to address broader educational inequities.
What do you hope readers will learn by reading this book? I want readers to realize that education can never be a one size fits all approach (or it becomes a one size fits none). I want them to become catalysts for change in their communities. I will always believe that change is possible when individuals dare to defy expectations and fight for what’s right.
Did you do much research when planning this book?
This book is my lived experience as over 20 years as an educator so I guess you can say that I put 20 years of research into planning this book. Then I spent another seven years in publishing then republishing the book.
Did you have any main people who helped you in the process of this book or influenced you to write it?
So first, there wouldn’t have been a book without my children—Emmett and Niles. If I hadn’t been forced to build an equitable alternative education system for them, I wouldn’t have had a story to tell about how I disrupted traditional education. Second, there wouldn’t have been a book if Mrs. Becky Wood wouldn’t have told me that she wanted “a whole house of high school graduates” because that was an idea that just seemed so unobtainable for anyone in her family and I was determined to make it a reality. Third, there wouldn’t have been a book without the unwavering dedication of my editorial team: Stephanie Wilson and Magdalena Bartkowska. These two women took my words that were sometimes raw and they held them close to polish them so that the rawness became more palatable.
How long did this book take you to write from initial thought to hitting publish?
The first time I published Educational Disobedience in 2018, I wrote the book in 14 days. It was 56 pages. When I republished Educational Disobedience in 2024, it took me almost a full year.
Do you have plans to write more about this topic or new topics?
I am going to continue to write about my journey—as an educational disruptor, as a nonprofit founder, and as someone living with a progressive neurological disorder.
