INTERVIEW

What was your main drive to write this book?

I’ve been a counselor and a pastor for 40 years, so I’ve walked alongside many people as they went through times of suffering. While I pastor, I did 2 different series on suffering. The recordings of those series were the most requested copies of my time at either church when I gave those messages.

I’ve had many dear friends over the years urge me to write. 2 years ago, the time, the idea, the format all came together in a remarkable weekend at the Oregon Coast. I know it was time to start this book. Writing it in an epistolary format made the writing simple to do each week.

What do you hope readers will learn by reading this book? I hope people will learn how to thrive in suffering not merely survive it. The theme of each letter comes from questions clients asked me over the years.

Did you do much research when planning this book? I read 60+ books on suffering from current books all the way to my beloved Puritans of the 17th Century. Additionally, I incorporated my sermon notes from 2 separate sermon series I gave on suffering into many of the letters.

Did you have any main people who helped you in the process of this book or influenced you to write it? My clients and congregants over the years provided the questions about suffering I wanted to answer. I also had a select group of friends who were my cheerleaders during the writing process. C.S.Lewis’ Screwtape Letters provided the inspiration to write it as series of letters.

How long did this book take you to write from initial thought to hitting publish? 2 full years from October 2022 at Bandon, Oregon to October 2024 when it was published.
