Interview

Tell me more about your journey as an author, including the writing processes.

After retiring at age 70, I eventually decided to take a stab at writing a novel. Five years later I’ve written eight of them. It began when an acquaintance told me about something that struck me. He described a New World Order that controls many events that take place on our planet regarding wars, politics, and power. After researching this unusual information, I created a fictional terrorist organization that was patterned after the New World Order that I named The New Global Order, which is sometimes referred to as The Committee.

In book seven, Ominous Odyssey by J.T. Kelly, the initial protagonist’s son, Amos McCabe, has graduated from college with a degree in anthropology and archeology. He and a friend receive an opportunity to work at an actual dig site at a cave south of Rome, Italy.

Tell me about your Book

Amos survived and even thrived in my sixth book, Missing Memories. Readers loved him, so I wanted to explore an opportunity for him to spread his wings in a new adventure.

During research for book seven, I learned that archeologists actually found the bones of nine Neanderthals in a cave south of Rome, Italy. They also uncovered the remains of prehistoric predators, including giant hyenas. Scientists determined that the hyenas possibly killed the Neanderthals and brought them to the cave for a feast.

Having lived in Italy for a year, I decided this would be a fun and fascinating opportunity for young McCabe. To find out as much as I could about the Neanderthals, I spent days poring over research about their lives 50,000 years ago. As you can imagine, they faced many challenges from their environment, including harsh weather phenomenon and volcanic eruptions. And from fierce beasts and humans. While humans interbred with Neanderthals, they also took them as slaves and cruelly mistreated them.

I learned that the Neanderthals were skilled as hunters, both on land and in the sea, and were adept at making fire, carving wood and stone, making jewelry and weapons. They could certainly defend themselves with spears, but they were no match for the humans.

What would it be like for a contemporary human to inexplicably enter the primitive world of the Neanderthals? What could he teach them to help them improve their lives? Or would the experience be too threatening to even survive? That’s why I decided to write Ominous Odyssey. The story evolved during the writing process. As you might imagine, it was an emotional experience, but I was thrilled with the final result of the novel. Many people tell me they too got emotional reading the novel’s ending.

I was thrilled to see this book review in Amazon Italy:

“What’s unique about this international thriller is its ability to explore the unknown. The story is intense and full of suspense, with an ending that is incredible. Ominous Odyssey is not just an adventure novel, it’s an intriguing journey that provokes reflection on what it means to be human, and how we can influence the world around us.”

About the Author

J.T. Kelly gained a love for the European continent while living in Rome, Italy, for a year and traveling extensively. These incredible experiences provided indelible memories. J.T. combined them with his fond recollections of summers spent on Lake Maxinkuckee in northern Indiana. Coincidentally, it's a place where other authors such as Kurt Vonnegut also enjoyed the area's charms. Readers find that most of Kelly's fictional novels begin at the lake where crimes occur. The stories frequently expand to Europe as the good guys search for the perpetrators.

Prior to developing his eight novels, Kelly honed his writing skills as an award-winning communications professional. An avid reader, J.T. has enjoyed numerous authors in the mystery, thriller & suspense categories. As a result, his followers will be hooked on the fast-paced excitement that rival many novels in these captivating and addictive genres.
