The shadows have retreated with Raven's downfall, but darkness still curls at the edges of the world. For a moment, though, Kari and Ari have a moment of peace. There is a glimmer of light that threatens to wash away the darkness as they finally bind their fates together in a formal ceremony.

But Raven hasn't given up, and there's an older, crueler foe who hasn't forgotten Kari - the Lord of Demons, the very one who crafted the Catalyst which Raven sought to control, still trapped in an ancient Tree.

Kari's moment of joy comes to a halt as the world shakes and Taris is ripped apart.

Velthas has risen.

Interview

Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?

Trust your friends, and trust yourself. Find your light and don’t let it go; it will give you strength to defeat any enemy.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

The hardest part is always the editing. It’s so hard to look at a scene and wonder what’s wrong with it. Then, when I do find out, I have to figure out how to make what’s in my head appear on paper!

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

I have written more than ten books. My favorite changes now and then, but consistently I love Storm & Shadow, book 2 of the Demon Storm series. This is when Raven, my main villain, gets introduced. Her interactions with Kari are some of my favorite of everything I’ve ever written.

If you had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?

I would choose Jennifer Lawrence to play Kari. She has the right kind of hardy attitude and raspy voice that matches Kari in my mind.

When did you begin writing?

I began writing when I was ten years old, more than 20 years ago now!

How long did it take to complete your first book?

It took quite a long time to complete my first book. Because I started when I was so young, I went through a lot of revisions before I even started having other people read it – then the editing process was an entirely different beast.

All in all, it took probably 15 years to finish Birth of the Storm from first edition to published.

Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?

I was inspired by many authors – particularly Tamora Pierce and Edith Pattou. I loved the way they wrote their characters and how their worlds affected me so deeply.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

My favorite part of writing is creating character dialogue. I love imagining how different people talk and how it feels when it comes naturally, even easily sometimes.

Describe your latest book in 4 words.

Demon King has risen.

Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?

Currently I am playing with a sequel series that will following approximately 15 years after Kari’s main series. It may not be what I publish next, but I’m returning to enjoying writing something new!
