Interview

What was your main drive to write this book? – “Built To Last” is the result of two years’ worth of discussions between myself and a close friend and training buddy. That interaction became the seed for the book which is aimed at addressing a fundamental question: Why is lifelong fitness so hard and how can we make it easier?

What do you hope readers will learn by reading this book? – Without good health everything collapses. Happiness becomes elusive. Success becomes impossible. Living a long, healthy life is no longer on the table. The thing is that with just a little thoughtful planning and without a lot of effort we can have all of that. We must be the ones who do it, however, no one is coming to do it for us so we must become responsible for ourselves in this regard.

Did you do much research when planning this book? – It took roughly three years of research and planning to write this book. It pulls together threads from neuroscience, neurobiology, evolutionary anthropology, physics and psychology, so yes.

Did you have any main people who helped you in the process of this book or influenced you to write it? – Writing is a brutally lonely business. Once you get past the stages of agents and editors who have some input in the viability of a proposed book, it comes down to the writer, their thoughts, their capability and the blank screen in front of them. I wonder sometimes what it would be like to co-write a book but the few times I have attempted it, it fell through so maybe I am one of those authors who work best alone.

How long did this book take you to write from initial thought to hitting publish? – It took three years of research and writing so when we take all the time I spent researching and going deep into subjects, into account, plus the rewriting stage after the first draft was submitted it took, start-to-finish about three and a half years.

Do you have plans to write more about this topic or new topics? – The honest answer is I don’t know yet. Each book I have written is a natural progression from what I did before and it has arisen organically almost from my interactions with friends, colleagues and readers. The “next one” right now is an amorphous cloud of possibilities containing several distinct ideas anyone of which could work in a book. It’s all percolating, still.

About the Author

David Amerland is a Chemical Engineer with an MSc. in quantum dynamics in laminar flow processes. He converted his knowledge of science and understanding of mathematics into a business writing career that's helped him demystify, for his readers, the complexity of subjects such as search engine optimization (SEO), search marketing, social media, decision-making, communication and personal development. The diversity of the subjects is held together by the underlying fundamentals governing human behavior and the way they are expressed online and offline. A lifelong martial arts practitioner, David Amerland is found punching and kicking sparring dummies and punch bags when he's not behind his keyboard.
