Interview
Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
If anything, I’d like my readers to feel uplifted, realizing no matter what stage of life you’re at, there’s always the possibility of something new and exciting around the next corner if you’ll just go out, look for it and grasp it.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Plotting! I’m drawn to complicated plots, peppered with red herrings. At times, I get myself completely tied in knots trying to wade through the weeds to make sense of the story, ensure the reader doesn’t get lost, and deliver a narrative that’s both logical and believable.
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I’ve written more books than I’ve had published, but I’m guessing many authors, like me, have novels in their bottom drawer. I call them my ‘training wheels’. My fourth novel is coming out in October 2026.
My latest book, Love. Camera. Action has been a passion project for me – ten years from first word to hitting the shelves. Being a romantic comedy, it’s quite a departure from my usually territory of historical mysteries/thrillers, but I adored every moment of writing it. Having said that, my second book, The Dilemma, remains the book I’m most proud of.
If You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
Julie Walters would be a fabulous Faith Farmer, with her great sense of comedic timing, naturalness and warm character.
When did you begin writing?
As soon as I could! As a little girl I used to make mini-magazines before I graduated to stories and poems. I trained as a journalist and my career was largely business writing until about 2010 when I went on a three-month sabbatical to Scotland, determined to try my hand at writing a work of fiction.
How long did it take to complete your first book?
A Voice In The Night took about 18 months, then it went through my agent’s process, then more edits after publisher acceptance, and was finally published four years after I first had the idea.
Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
I was definitely influenced by all the authors who I devoured as soon as I could read, from Enid Blyton to Agatha Christie to Maeve Binchy. But mostly I attribute my love of writing to the encouragement of my high school English teacher, Miss Garrood. She told me I’d never score highly in my English exams because I was too original in my approach – but I should not be disheartened.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
I love the editing process, and in particular working with an editor to bring the final draft into the best possible shape. I love the brainstorming, arguments and ‘aha’ moments of polishing the manuscript and ironing out all the glitches. There’s nothing more satisfying, if at times frustrating!
Describe your latest book in 4 words.
A bittersweet romantic comedy
Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?
A B-grade Hollywood actress comes to a small country town and opens a cinema, showing old movies. Lonely locals flock to it and in the process find new loves and friendships – but not without a slew of disappointments and road bumps along the way.
Next year I have another thriller coming out, High Land, about a girl who survives a tandem skydive that kills her instructor.
