TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE WITH THE WAY YOU SPEAK

As human beings, we have a deep need for social connection, yet our primitive fight-or-flight response can be a major barrier to achieving it, leading to misunderstanding, conflict and disconnection.

Fortunately, there is a solution.

The Human Language delivers a compelling message. By replacing our habitual, learned patterns of communication we can experience greater understanding, empathy and connection in our relationships, transforming our lives.

Through easy-to-follow chapters, this book introduces The MECAnism, to calm your instinctive reactions, gain emotional clarity and develop psychological safety. It gives you the practical tools and techniques to listen, speak and act in your daily life with compassion, for yourself and others, enabling you to meet your needs with confidence.

"I will recommend using The Human Language 1000 times. It helps me verbalise my feelings and work through moments of overwhelm. There are applications across all areas of life.It can, and will be, a transformative book."

Pam Bryant, Oxford, UK

"Penny uses just enough science to help the reader understand why they behave the way they do while focusing on simple techniques to get to the heart of change.

The Human Language should be required reading for anybody who has to work or live with other people, which is most of us."

Diana D'Ascoli, Philadelphia, US

Interview

What was your main drive to write this book?

Because of the life transformation I underwent in learning these communication techniques, I wanted to bring it to as many people as possible. I have for a long time wondered why we’re not all speaking like this, why we aren’t taught it in school.  So, I wanted to spread the news of this language in a way that people could relate to it everyday.  I started by researching what feelings are, what thoughts are, how the brain works to understand the reasons for why we speak like we do. The more I searched, the more interesting it got – and I already had the solution.

What do you hope readers will learn by reading this book?

Firstly that they have the ability to make changes in their life through the way they think, speak and listen. Secondly, that they will use The MECAnism – a 4 step framework – as a reminder of how to frame what they say when speaking at home, at work and in everyday life.

Did you do much research when planning this book?

Yes I did lots of research – once I started, I was insatiable.  I found myself delving into neuroscience, the brain, the history of humans, and much more.  I was fascinated.

Did you have any main people who helped you in the process of this book or influenced you to write it?

Yes – firstly my coach, Janey Lee Grace, who helped me to decide I could do it, and then my first editor, Sophie Bradshaw, who helped me organize my thoughts into a coherent plan.  Then there was my life coach, Gosia Gorna, who helped me connect with what to call it, and then my editor and agent, Wendy Yorke, who travelled the journey with me from editing to publishing. And of course my publisher Serapis Bey, and Parul Agrawal, who helped bring it to fruition.

How long did this book take you to write from initial thought to hitting publish?

That’s a long time – it’s actually been 9 years (part time)!

Do you have plans to write more about this topic or new topics?

Absolutely.  Firstly, I have the other half of The Human Language to finish.  I wrote double the amount of content and was advised to split it in half – so I am about to start editing the other half now.  I also have ideas for a few others in the series, based around this topic, for different audiences – parents, teachers, teenagers, new managers, etc.
