Brooklyn Monti is dying. Or at least she thinks she is. Every since Brooklyn was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease at 19, she's used it to give up on herself. Huntington's has affected her career, her friendships, and her love life. But will she let it control her future? When Brooklyn meets the man of her dreams she must decide whether Huntington's is going to take away the one thing she's always wanted: a family.
Getting through life is no longer acceptable. It’s time to fall in love, chase dreams, and build a legacy. This story is smart, sexy, funny, and hopeful. Let's go on the journey with Brooklyn.
Can you give a
fun or interesting fact about your book?
Tulips pop up
throughout the book. They hold a specific meaning you'll learn about by the end
of the book. It will also tie into the title.
Do you plan all your characters out before you start a story
or do they develop as you write?
Yes, I created writing organizers. They’re like worksheets
that allow me to develop three-dimensional characters. My goal is to create
memorable characters that the readers will connect with and root for throughout
the story. With Brooklyn, you scream, GET IT TOGETHER a few times. But she’ll
win you over again. She’s human, so she makes mistakes. But a story is about
redemption—well, in this instance.
What do you
feel are your strengths and weaknesses as a writer?
My weakness as
a writer is editing as I write or getting stuck editing the same thing many
times. Your goal is to get the words out when writing your first draft. My
strength is perseverance. I never give up. I will do whatever it takes to
conquer my goals.
Do you believe
in Writer’s Block? If so, what do you do
when the words stop flowing?
I believe in
Writer’s Block. I don’t encounter it often. But when I do, I take a little time
away from writing and do some fun or relaxing things to clear my mind. When I
return to it with an open mind, the words flow.
I’ve found
most writers are also readers. Do you have a favorite book? What do you love
about it?
My favorite
book is by Sydney Sheldon If Tomorrow Comes. He is unmatched as a storyteller
in my eyes. His characters and conflict keep you on the edge of your seat,
wondering what they'll do next. Even when Tracy Whitney turned into a bad girl,
I still rooted for her. He's a treasure.
What’s the one
thing you hope readers gain from reading Broken Petals?
My main
character suffers from Huntington’s disease. It’s like a ticking time bomb, and
she has no idea when it will go off. So she has to make a decision. Will she
allow it to define her life and live in fear, or will she go after everything
she wants in life—love, children, dream career, etc.? So when Brooklyn goes on
this journey of self-discovery, it was my goal to give my readers hope. It
could be a big or small obstacle in your life. It should not define or stifle
you. You have to decide to push through because no matter what, there is HOPE.
Are you
working on anything else? Can you tell us about it?
I recently completed the 1st draft of my next book. Iris is
Brooklyn’s best friend in Broken Petal. Now she's the main character of her
story, and boy is it a doozy. It's still a work in progress, so I can't expound
upon it because things will more-than-likely change.
